How to use the carbon pile load tester (BCI method)
Charge the battery fully
The battery should read about 12.6V at rest. A partly charged battery gives a false low reading.
Connect the clamps
Clean the terminals and clamp firmly — poor contact skews the result.
Set the load
Dial the load to half the battery's rated CCA, not full 500A.
Hold the load for 15 seconds
Apply the load for a full 15 seconds while watching the voltage gauge.
Read the result
Minimal sag means a healthy battery. A steep drop indicates weakness.
Cool down
Let the tester cool between heavy tests.
